University of Southern California -- Institute for Multimedia Literacy -- School of Cinema-Television
Core Multimedia Intro VideoHome

Literacy in the 21st century includes both writing and multimedia authoring, and the University of Southern California is pleased to provide vital multimedia skills to students in General Education classes through its Multimedia in the Core program. Here, undergraduates have the opportunity to work with images, sound and text to create multimedia projects in classes within USC’s Core through a collaboration between the School of Cinema-Television’s Institute for Multimedia Literacy and the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

Each GE class includes an affiliated Practicum in Multimedia Authorship (MDA 140) in which students gain a foundation in basic digital literacy; from there, each lab invites students to create projects specific to the affiliated course. Because the multimedia practicum requires additional work, students earn two credits for the practicum, in addition to the four credits normally earned in the affiliated Core courses.

The GE courses with an affiliated multimedia practicum are capped at 60 students, and each practicum section is capped at 20 students, allowing for an intimate, hands-on lab experience. Students will learn how to make visual arguments, conduct sophisticated networked research and present media-based projects effectively. In some classes, students will make short films; others may create interactive essays presented on DVD or online; and others may record and distribute podcasts. The actual projects vary by course and topic.
